     STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2015

____________

S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING RANDALL T. SZYBA ON THE OCCASION OF RETIREMENT AS

SUPERVISOR OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY'S LEGISLATIVE PRESS AND PUBLIC

INFORMATION BUREAU

Introduced By: Senators Sheehan, DaPonte, Gallo, Felag, and Walaska

     Date Introduced: June 18, 2015

Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration

1

WHEREAS, Randy Szyba originally hailed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After spending

2

1971 through 1972 teaching English to high school students in the Peace Corps in Iran, he

3

decided to stay in the country an extra year, working as a copy editor at an English-language daily

4

newspaper. His editorial skills were greatly admired but his height and fair coloring provided a bit

5

of danger to his sojourn in Tehran; and

6

WHEREAS, Randy returned stateside and joined the staff of the Pawtucket Times as a

7

news reporter, and sixteen years later, left the newsroom as a Managing Editor. During his tenure

8

at the Times, Randy actually once had to "stop the presses" in order to include the report of the

9

Challenger shuttle explosion; and

10

WHEREAS, On March 14th of 1992, Randy began his employment as a publicist with

11

the General Assembly's Legislative Press and Public Information Bureau. Through hard work,

12

long hours, and amazing writing skills, he was named Supervisor of the Bureau on May 1st of

13

2005; and

14

WHEREAS, Fondly nicknamed "Red Alert Randy" by his staff, he led the team that

15

produces House and Senate news releases for the General Assembly's 113 members. On any

16

given day, Randy's keyboard took copious amounts of abuse as he pounded out releases on the

17

introduction and progress of legislator's bills, various issues of concern to the state, and on what

18

the legislators foresee their legislation accomplishing; and

19

WHEREAS, Oftentimes producing myriad articles and bulletins with unfathomably little

1

lead time, Randy's panoply of talents included the ability to write informative pieces on a vast

2

array of complex legislation and issues. His comprehensive and timely releases on the Assembly's

3

political issues and events-of-the-day were always well-reasoned and thoughtful, and earned him

4

the admiration of his colleagues and the respect and gratitude of the members of the General

5

Assembly; and

6

WHEREAS, An invaluable asset to the General Assembly, Randy Szyba has not only

7

earned the respect of the legislators he has so ably served, but as of June 27, 2015, he has also

8

earned some much desired time on the golf course with his brand new golf clubs, as well as the

9

opportunity to travel and spend quality time in Tucson, Kansas City, and Spring City, visiting

10

with his children, Nathan, Jeremy, and Allison, and his much-loved grandchildren; now, therefore

11

be it

12

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

13

hereby congratulates and thanks Randall T. Szyba for his eloquent and informative journalism

14

and leadership of the General Assembly's Legislative Press and Public Information Bureau. We

15

moreover commend him for his dedicated efforts to inform and enlighten the citizenry of Rhode

16

Island, and wish him the very best health, relaxation, a little place in Cabo San Lucas, and enough

17

lobster rolls to bankrupt a small business; and be it further

18

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

19

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Randall T. Szyba.
