S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING "SAVE THE LAKES" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Invasive plants can limit boating, fishing, and recreational activities, push

2

out native species, and reduce water quality. A survey conducted by the Department of

3

Environmental Management in 2012 found that nearly 63 percent of Rhode Island’s fresh water

4

bodies have one or more water quality impairments, primarily, 30 percent contained at least one

5

invasive plant species; and

6

     WHEREAS, Founded in 2008, Save the Lakes is an alliance of individuals and

7

associations dedicated to improving, protecting, and preserving the fresh water bodies of Rhode

8

Island for future generations; and

9

     WHEREAS, Save the Lakes is the only statewide organization dedicated to the

10

preservation and protection of Rhode Island lakes, ponds, and fresh water resources; and

11

     WHEREAS, Save the Lakes is an active force working to protect, restore, and explore

12

Rhode Island's fresh water resources; and

13

     WHEREAS, Save the Lakes provides a forum for exchange, development, and research

14

of fresh water resources information, and advocates for better fresh water management before

15

local, State, and Federal governments and agencies; now, therefore be it

16

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

17

hereby recognizes "Save the Lakes" in the State of Rhode Island. We applaud its efforts and its

18

emphasis on preserving Rhode Island’s fresh water bodies, and wish the organization continued

19

success in its future endeavors; and be it further

20

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Judy Colaluca, President and Co-founder of

2

Save the Lakes.
