A N   A C T

RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES -- REGISTRATION OF VEHICLES --

PROVIDENCE CITY COUNCIL

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 31-3 of the General Laws entitled "Registration of Vehicles" is

hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     31-3-104. Providence city council plates. -- (a) The administrator of the division of

motor vehicles is directed to make available to each duly elected member of the Providence city

council, so long as the member is serving during the term for which the member has been elected

as a member of the Providence city council and no longer, one special motor vehicle registration

plate carrying the words "Providence City Council". The plates are to have special identifying

numbers corresponding to the number of the ward from which the member was elected.

     (b) The special motor vehicle registration plates shall carry thereon the design and the

seal of the city of Providence and shall be furnished upon payment of an additional registration

charge of twenty-five dollars ($25.00) and shall be subject to all other applicable registration and

renewal fees.

     (c) Each member of any Providence city council, at the expiration of the member's term,

unless reelected, may retain the special motor vehicle registration plates in their own keeping,

provided the member does not display the plates upon any motor vehicle or any other form of

transportation owned or operated by the member.

     (d) Any violation of the provisions of subsection (c) of this section shall be deemed a

civil violation, and any person displaying a special motor vehicle registration plate upon any

vehicle shall, upon conviction, be fined ten dollars ($10.00) for each offense.

     (e) The administrator of the division of motor vehicles shall reserve for the future use of

each member of the Providence city council the private registration plates which that member

turns in to the division of motor vehicles in return for councilperson's plates. The administrator of

the division of motor vehicles shall annually, during the month of January, submit a written

notice to each member of the Providence city council notifying the member of the private

registration plates which are being reserved for the member's future use. The notice shall indicate

the registration plate designation and the member for which it is being reserved.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
