RELATING TO STATE AFFAIRS AND GOVERNMENT -- ECONOMIC AMBASSADOR OF

RHODE ISLAND

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Title 42 of the General Laws entitled "STATE AFFAIRS AND

GOVERNMENT" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following chapter:

CHAPTER 100.2

RHODE ISLAND ECONOMIC AMBASSADOR

     42-100.2-1. Economic ambassador. -- There is hereby created the post of Rhode Island

economic ambassador.

     42-100.2-2. Appointment. -- The governor, with the consent of the senate, shall appoint

one or more persons to serve as an economic ambassador. These persons shall serve at the

pleasure of the governor with the appointment to be for a term of not more than five (5) years.

     42-100.2-3. Compensation. – An economic ambassador shall receive no compensation.

     42-100.2-4. Qualifications. – An economic ambassador must have earned recognition

and distinction as a business leader in the state of Rhode Island.

     42-100.2-5. Duties. -- The duties of the economic ambassador shall include promoting

business activities and economic investments in Rhode Island from different regions throughout

the nation and world.

     42-100.2-6. Certification. -- The secretary of state shall issue to the appointee a

certificate bearing the seal of the state upon which is designated the name of the appointee, the

words "Rhode Island economic ambassador," and the term of office set forth from beginning to

ending month and year of service.

     42-100.2-7. Position of honor. -- The position of economic ambassador shall be

honorific only, and shall not confer official status; nor shall the statements or views of the

economic ambassador be regarded as the official position of the state in any court of law; nor the

position of any of the state officers.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

RELATING TO STATE AFFAIRS AND GOVERNMENT -- ECONOMIC AMBASSADOR OF

RHODE ISLAND

     This act would establish the unpaid position of economic ambassador for the state of

Rhode Island to promote business activities and economic investments throughout the nation and

the world.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
