RELATING TO EDUCATION - COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Chapter 16-33.1 of the General Laws entitled "Community College of |
2 | Rhode Island [See Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby |
3 | amended by adding thereto the following section: |
4 | 16-33.1-7. Community College of Rhode Island excellence grant. – (a) There shall be |
5 | a grant award provided by the Community College of Rhode Island which shall be administered |
6 | annually to any Rhode Island resident applicant who satisfies the following criteria: |
7 | (1) The applicant shall be twenty (20) years of age or less; |
8 | (2) The applicant shall be a full-time student at the Community College of Rhode Island |
9 | or applicant therefor; |
10 | (3) The applicant must have graduated in the top fifteen percent (15%) of their high |
11 | school class; |
12 | (4) The applicant must have a ninety-five percent (95%) attendance record or better, |
13 | excluding documented absences for medical reasons, over the preceding four (4) year period; and |
14 | (5) The applicant must have achieved an "SAT" or "ACT" score at or above the state |
15 | average for the preceding year in which the applicant has applied for the grant. |
16 | (b) Any grant award provided pursuant to this section shall be appropriated from the |
17 | general fund. |
18 | (c) Grant awards pursuant to this section shall be offered to any qualifying applicant for a |
19 | period of two (2) years, and may be revoked or suspended upon the occurrence of any event |

1 | which would subject the student to dismissal or suspension from the school or would otherwise |
2 | disqualify the student from receiving federal student aid. |
3 | (d) Grant awards provided pursuant to this section may be applied in addition to any |
4 | other qualifying grant or award which the applicant shall receive. |
5 | (e) The board of education may adopt rules and regulations necessary to implement the |
6 | provisions of this section. |
7 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
