It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Chapter 16-22 of the General Laws entitled "Curriculum [See Title 16 |
2 | Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby amended by adding thereto |
3 | the following section: |
4 | 16-22-13.1. Instruction in financial literacy. – (a) The department of elementary and |
5 | secondary education shall incorporate financial literacy education into the board of education's |
6 | basic education program regulations. The school committees of the several cities, towns, and |
7 | school districts shall provide for the incorporation of mandatory instruction of students in grades |
8 | nine (9) through twelve (12) on the subject of financial literacy. The completion of a course of |
9 | instruction on financial literacy shall be required prior to graduation from high school. |
10 | (b) For the purposes of this section "financial literacy" means the ability to use |
11 | knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively. |
12 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
