RELATING TO EDUCATION -- CERTIFICATION OF TEACHERS | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Chapter 16-11 of the General Laws entitled "Certification of Teachers [See |
2 | Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board Of Education Act]" is hereby amended by adding |
3 | thereto the following section: |
4 | 16-11-8. Emergency first aid, CPR and automated external defibrillator training |
5 | required. -- Every person seeking initial certification or recertification under this chapter shall |
6 | provide evidence of completion of certification or training in emergency first aid, |
7 | cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). |
8 | The certification or training program shall be developed by the commissioner of elementary and |
9 | secondary education and shall be based on the current national evidence-based emergency |
10 | cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated |
11 | external defibrillator, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association or the |
12 | American Red Cross. The board of education shall provide a waiver for this requirement for any |
13 | person with a disability whose disability prohibits such person from completing the certification |
14 | or training, and for any person employed in a school which does not possess an AED device. |
15 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

3 | exceptions for those who are disabled and those employed in a school which lacks an AED |
4 | device. |
