RECOGNIZING MARCH 7-13, 2016, AS NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS | |
AWARENESS WEEK IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease of the central nervous |
2 | system, affecting at least 2.3 million people worldwide; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater New England Chapter |
4 | reports that in our state, it serves more than 2,000 people diagnosed with MS, and that the disease |
5 | generally strikes people in the prime of life, between ages 20 through 50, and causes |
6 | unpredictable effects in which the progression, severity and specific symptoms cannot be |
7 | foreseen, and the cause and cure for this often debilitating disease remain unknown; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The National MS Society, Greater New England Chapter has been |
9 | committed for more than 65 years to creating a world free of MS, heightening public knowledge |
10 | about and insight into the disease while mobilizing people and resources so that everyone affected |
11 | by MS can live their best lives as they stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end |
12 | MS forever; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Since 1946, the National MS Society has been a driving force of MS |
14 | research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and a cure and has invested more than 920 |
15 | million dollars in groundbreaking research; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Funds raised through the National MS Society fuel the efforts of more than |
17 | 380 research projects globally totaling nearly 54 million dollars annually at the best medical |
18 | centers, universities and other institutions throughout the United States and abroad. Because of |
19 | this, MS research has never been more hopeful than it is today; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Discovering the cause, finding a cure, and preventing future generations |
2 | from being diagnosed with MS is an important task that all Americans and Rhode Islanders |
3 | should support; now, therefore be it |
4 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
5 | Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the importance of finding the cause and cure of MS, a |
6 | chronic and often devastating disease, and expresses its appreciation and admiration for the |
7 | dedication that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater New England Chapter, has shown |
8 | toward a future free of MS; and be it further |
9 | RESOLVED, That this House hereby recognizes the week of March 7 – 13, 2016 as |
10 | "National Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week" and encourages all Rhode Islanders to learn more |
11 | about multiple sclerosis and what they can do to support individuals with MS and their families; |
12 | and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
14 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Warwick office of the National Multiple |
15 | Sclerosis Society, Greater New England Chapter. |
