RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE DEDICATION AND LEADERSHIP OF THE | |
NEWPORT RESTORATION FOUNDATION FOR "KEEPING HISTORY ABOVE WATER" | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Newport Restoration Foundation was founded in 1968 by Doris Duke, |
2 | an heiress and lifelong preservationist who summered in Newport and spent much of her vast |
3 | fortune restoring colonial buildings in the city; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Established as a non-profit institution, the Newport Restoration Foundation |
5 | works to preserve, interpret, and maintain landscape and objects that reflect Aquidneck Island's |
6 | 18th- and 19th-century architectural culture; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Having restored or preserved eighty-three buildings since its inception, the |
8 | Newport Restoration Foundation continues to own seventy-eight historic buildings, including |
9 | seventy-three homes that are rented as private residences, adding to the rich history and vibrancy |
10 | of the community; and |
11 | WHEREAS, On April 10th through the 13th of April, 2016, the Newport Restoration |
12 | Foundation is presenting the "Keeping History Above Water Conference," which will be "one of |
13 | the first national conversations on the risks posed by sea level rise to historic coastal communities |
14 | and their built environments"; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Awareness for the value, and dedication to the historic preservation of our |
16 | state's architecture and culture is an essential component in building a strong foundation for |
17 | future generations and the overall vitality of our state; now, therefore be it |
18 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
19 | Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the leadership of the Newport Restoration Foundation |

1 | for "Keeping History Above Water" and commends their almost fifty years of dedication to the |
2 | preservation of Aquidneck Island; and be it further |
3 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
4 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Pieter Roos, Executive Director of the Newport |
5 | Restoration Foundation. |
