CONGRATULATING THE PONAGANSET BOYS' BASEBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE | |
RHODE ISLAND DIVISION II BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Ponaganset Boys' Baseball team had an outstanding 2016 regular |
2 | season, compiling a sterling 15-3 League record and tying Tiverton High School for first place in |
3 | the Division; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Ponaganset rolled through the early rounds of the Rhode Island Divisional |
5 | State Playoffs, defeating Tolman in the first game and later defeating Mount St. Charles to |
6 | advance to the State Tournament championship round. The Chieftains were led throughout the |
7 | playoffs by the dynamic pitching provided by their League Cy Young Award Winner Mike |
8 | Viveiros, and the slugging provided by MVP Award Winner Tyler Flynn; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The first two games of the Division II State Baseball finals played at |
10 | McCoy Stadium against The Prout School were thrilling low scoring affairs, with Ponaganset |
11 | emerging victorious in the first game by the score of 1 to 0, and Prout winning the second game |
12 | by the score of 2 to 1; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In the pressure packed deciding game, Ponaganset pulled away to win the |
14 | championship by the score of 4 to 1, thanks to the timely hitting provided by Billy Butler and the |
15 | clutch pitching provided by Mike Viveiros who battled hard throughout the game, pitching out of |
16 | tough jams and only surrendering one run to lead the Chieftains to the first Rhode Island State |
17 | Baseball Title in the long and storied history of Ponaganset High School athletics; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The Ponaganset baseball team was also awarded the 2016 Sportsmanship |
19 | Award by the Rhode Island Umpires Association and the Division II Coaches Association; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Winning a State Championship in a team sport is an incredibly difficult |
2 | achievement, one that requires that every member of the team give his all and put team goals |
3 | ahead of personal aspirations. Ponaganset was blessed to have an abundance of these kinds of |
4 | players as they were led all season by the significant contributions provided by Billy Butler, |
5 | Brenton Travers, Chris DiPetrillo, Curtis Briggs, Devon Atkinson, Jake Ferrucci, John Biafore, |
6 | Joshua Greene, Julian Poirier, Ken Desrosiers, Alec Gardella, Michael Viveiros, Peter Fiore, |
7 | Tyler Flynn and Ty Parrillo. The Chieftains were also aided all season by the sterling leadership |
8 | and coaching provided by Head Coach Anthony Parrillo, and Assistant Coaches Brian Gendreau |
9 | and Pete Keefe; now, therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
11 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Ponaganset Boys' Baseball Team on winning the |
12 | Division II Rhode State Baseball Championship; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
14 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Anthony Parrillo, Head Baseball Coach, |
15 | Ponaganset High School. |
