CONGRATULATING LIEUTENANT JAMES E. TIERNAN ON HIS RETIREMENT FROM | |
THE WEST WARWICK POLICE DEPARTMENT AFTER TWENTY-TWO YEARS OF | |
DEVOTED AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF WEST WARWICK | |

1 | WHEREAS, Lieutenant James E. Tiernan began his distinguished public service career |
2 | when he was appointed to the position of Police Officer in the Town of West Warwick in 1994. |
3 | He began his service in the Patrol Division and he steadily rose through the ranks as his attention |
4 | to detail and tireless work ethic were noticed by his superiors. He was promoted to Sergeant on |
5 | February 15, 2000, and served in the Patrol Division and the Detective Division until he was |
6 | promoted to Lieutenant on June 1, 2011; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Lieutenant Tiernan formerly served as a department and police academy |
8 | defensive tactics instructor, field training officer, and program coordinator. He was also a long- |
9 | time member of the SWAT Team and served as a Team Commander for more than four years. |
10 | Additionally, he was a member of the honor guard and served as a department firearms instructor; |
11 | and |
12 | WHEREAS, Lieutenant Tiernan's last assignment with the West Warwick Police |
13 | Department was as a supervisor of the 8am to 4pm shift. He has been recognized by the |
14 | department for his exemplary police work many times and has received numerous |
15 | commendations, including First and Second Class Citations, and was the recipient of the |
16 | department's Distinguished Service Award in 2001. Lieutenant Tiernan also attained a Bachelor |
17 | of Arts degree in Justice Studies from Rhode Island College in 1997; now, therefore be it |
18 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
19 | hereby congratulates Lieutenant James E. Tiernan on his retirement from the West Warwick |

1 | Police Department after twenty-two years of devoted and meritorious service to the citizens of |
2 | West Warwick. We wish him a most happy retirement and continued success in all his future |
3 | endeavors; and be it further |
4 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
5 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Lieutenant James E. Tiernan. |
