EXPRESSING SINCERE CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF RICHARD D.

SANTAMARIA, SR.

     WHEREAS, It is with utmost sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of

2

Richard D. Santamaria, Sr., the devoted husband of fifty-four years to the late Arlene Santamaria,

3

the beloved father of Councilman Richard Santamaria and his wife, Rita, and Michael

4

Santamaria, and the proud grandfather of three grandchildren, Thomas, David, and Kaylyn

5

Santamaria, and three great-grandchildren, Jayden, Benjamin, and Anthony Santamaria; and

6

     WHEREAS, Born in Providence, Mr. Santamaria was the son of the late Frank and Rose

7

Santamaria, the brother of Janice Ruizzo, Mildred Swanson, the late Catherine Tavares and Frank

8

Santamaria, and brother-in-law of Marian Jones; and

9

     WHEREAS, Mr. Santamaria had honorably served in the United States Army during the

10

Korean War and also in France and Germany. He had been employed by the State until his

11

retirement in 1988; and

12

     WHEREAS, Described as a "community legend" by former Mayor Michael Traficante,

13

Mr. Santamaria was a driving force behind youth sports in the City of Cranston, and particularly

14

with the Cranston Western Little League, with whom he served in myriad capacities including,

15

for many years, as President. He was memorialized with the naming of a field at Briggs Complex

16

in his honor and was presented with a Little League World Series hat when the Cranston Western

17

team won the Rhode Island and New England championships; and

18

     WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Santamaria was involved with the Cranston American Little

19

League, where he had served as a District Administrator for the state tournaments. He was also an

assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 24, and a member of the Saint Joseph's Guild at

2

Immaculate Conception Church; and

3

     WHEREAS, There is no doubt that Richard Santamaria, Sr., left this world a far better

4

place because of his life’s endeavors. He was a steadfast gentleman, whose integrity and

5

determination enriched the lives of all who knew him and was an inspiration to generations of

6

young men; now, therefore be it

7

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

8

hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of Richard D. Santamaria, Sr.; and be it

9

further

10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Richard and Rita Santamaria and

12

Family, and Mr. Michael Santamaria.
