CONGRATULATING ROBBIE THORP ON BEING SELECTED AS ONE OF RHODE

ISLAND'S DISTINGUISHED FINALISTS IN THE 21ST ANNUAL PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT

OF COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM

     WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Award, presented by Prudential

2

Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors

3

young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to

4

serving their communities; and

5

     WHEREAS, The names of more than 29,000 young people from across the country were

6

nominated and submitted to the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program by various

7

schools and organizations across the country. The candidates were then reviewed by an

8

independent panel that selected the State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists based on criteria

9

including personal initiative, effort, impact, and personal growth; and

10

     WHEREAS, Robbie Thorp achieved national recognition for his exemplary volunteer

11

service by being selected as one of the distinguished finalists for the 2016 Prudential Spirit of

12

Community Awards; and

13

     WHEREAS, The recipients of this award clearly demonstrate that young people across

14

America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities and

15

deserve all the praise and appreciation that we can give them; and

16

     WHEREAS, Robbie has earned myriad honors for his advocacy and efforts to raise

17

awareness for epilepsy. He has been honored by Governor Raimondo, former Governor Chafee,

18

and Congressman Cicilline, and was chosen to be a Teen Advocate representing Rhode Island

19

with the Epilepsy Foundation of New England, and together with his mom, was also honored at

the 32nd Annual Candlelight Dinner and Auction by the Foundation; and

2

     WHEREAS, In addition, Robbie has successfully advocated for the recognition of

3

Epilepsy Awareness Day before his local Town Council, and qualified for the President's

4

Volunteer Service Award. He also generously gives his time and energy as a volunteer at a camp

5

for children with epilepsy, is a member of the Adolescent Leadership Council, and is a member of

6

the Rhode Island Community Action Network for Epilepsy; and

7

     WHEREAS, The success of the State of Rhode Island, the strength of our communities,

8

and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of

9

young people like Robbie Thorp who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others;

10

now, therefore be it

11

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

12

hereby congratulates Robbie Thorp on being selected as one of the 2016 Prudential Spirit of

13

Community Award Distinguished Finalists. We furthermore recognize and applaud his

14

outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit, and extend our

15

best wishes for his continued success and happiness; and be it further

16

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

17

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Robbie Thorp.
