STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |
IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY | |
JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2016
____________ | |
S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N | |
PROCLAIMING THURSDAY, MARCH 3RD, 2016, AS "TNC DAY" IN THE STATE OF
RHODE ISLAND | |
| |
Introduced By: Senators Pichardo, Paiva Weed, Algiere, Lombardi, and Sheehan
Date Introduced: March 03, 2016
Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration
1 | WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1951, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), has diligently |
2 | endeavored to "conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends" and has done more to |
3 | achieve this noble mission and advance conservation, than any other organization on earth; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Through worldwide partnerships, chapters, and coalitions, The Nature |
5 | Conservancy is working to make a lasting difference in 69 countries, and has enlisted the efforts |
6 | of more than 600 scientists and spatial analysists; and |
7 | WHEREAS, In Caribbean island nations such as the Dominican Republic, fresh water, so |
8 | essential and elemental to life itself, is a very scarce resource. TNC has worked to introduce water |
9 | funds and tools to implement water conservation efforts. In 2013, two funds were established in |
10 | the Dominican Republic, one of which supports the nation's watersheds and another that focuses |
11 | on the largest river system in the country, the Yaque del Norte. The resultant benefits of these |
12 | two funds have provided 60 percent of the country's population with fresh water; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In the Ocean State, The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island's goal "is to |
14 | protect the natural character of our beautiful state." Efforts include protecting land and |
15 | freshwater, restoring healthy coastal waters, the restoration of oyster reefs and fishing habitats, |
16 | and encouraging the citizens of the state to explore and enjoy the "wonders of nature"; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Theodore Roosevelt wisely stated, "To waste, to destroy our natural |
18 | resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will |
19 | result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to |
| |
1 | hand down to them amplified and developed"; now, therefore be it |
2 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
3 | hereby proclaims Thursday, March 3rd, 2016, to be "TNC Day." We moreover recognize and |
4 | extend our sincere gratitude to those who have helped TNC to enrich our lives and build a |
5 | brighter future for generations to come; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Terry Sullivan, State Director of the Nature |
8 | Conservancy of Rhode Island. |
