     STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2016

____________

S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING SOUTH COUNTY ARTIFICIAL LIMB & BRACE ON BEING

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR FORTY YEARS OF DEDICATED AND EXEMPLARY

TREATMENT OF VETERANS ADMINISTRATION AND OTHER PATIENTS IN THE

LOCAL COMMUNITY

Introduced By: Senators Sosnowski, Crowley, Kettle, Felag, and Picard

     Date Introduced: March 08, 2016

Referred To: Placed on the Senate Consent Calendar

1

WHEREAS, South County Artificial Limb & Brace (SCAL) was recently honored and

2

recognized by the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association in its esteemed monthly journal,

3

the O&P Almanac, for forty years of devoted, distinguished and superb service to those in need of

4

orthotics and prosthetics; and

5

WHEREAS, Robert James and his wife, Lois, founded South County Artificial Limb &

6

Brace in 1976, with Robert serving as clinician and Lois, as office administrator. Prior to the

7

founding of the company, Robert took part in a joint Boston inter-hospital and Veterans

8

Administration study and investigation that closely followed amputees from surgery to the

9

placement of permanent prosthesis. This experience helped Mr. James to understand the needs of

10

his patients and proved to be a significant incentive to his desire to create and build the best

11

possible orthotic and prosthetic company, one completely committed to providing patients with

12

the best artificial limbs and braces in existence; and

13

WHEREAS, South County Artificial Limb & Brace is a family run business

14

headquartered in Wakefield, Rhode Island, with satellite offices in Woonsocket, and Plainfield,

15

Connecticut. In addition to founders Robert and Lois James, their son Josh serves as Clinical

16

Director and what was once a three person staff has now grown to include two office

17

administrators, a billing expert and a lab technician. They all take pride in treating their patients

18

as members of their family and are proud of the trust each patient gives them; and

1

WHEREAS, South County Artificial Limb & Brace receives most of its patients from

2

local hospitals, including the VA Hospital in Providence. They work closely with amputation

3

patients before surgery and follow them closely after surgery in order to monitor residual limb

4

shrinkage. Their work product is highly respected by peers and is second-to-none. Almost

5

everything is hand fabricated in-house. In the words of Clinical Director Josh James, "a local

6

wound care center recommends SCAL because none of the facility's amputees wind up there with

7

problematic wounds"; now, therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

9

hereby congratulates South County Artificial Limb & Brace on being recognized for forty years

10

of devoted and exemplary treatment of VA and other patients in the local community; and be it

11

further

12

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

13

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Josh James, BOCPO and CPO of South

14

County Artificial Limb & Brace.
