S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE TOMAQUAG MUSEUM ON BEING SELECTED AS A

FINALIST FOR THE 2016 NATIONAL MEDAL FOR MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICE

     WHEREAS, Annually, the Institute of Museum and Library Services bestows its highest

2

national honor, the National Medal, to museums and libraries for demonstrating innovative

3

approaches and extraordinary service to the community; and

4

     WHEREAS, The Tomaquag Museum, located in Exeter, Rhode Island, has received the

5

coveted distinction of being named as one of the thirty 2016 finalists for this prestigious Medal;

6

and

7

     WHEREAS, Established almost six decades ago, by anthropologist Eva Butler, the

8

Tomaquag Museum is Rhode Island's "only museum dedicated to telling the story of the state's

9

Indigenous Peoples" and is also the only museum in the state to be operated by Native people;

10

and

11

     WHEREAS, Through inventive approaches such as the museum's podcast, as well as

12

preserving records, creating partnerships, and educating the public through films, books, exhibits,

13

lectures and workshops, the Tomaquag Museum is keeping the rich history and culture of the

14

Native Community alive for future generations; and

15

     WHEREAS, Utilizing the core guiding values of Respect, Leadership, Inclusiveness,

16

Knowledge, and Responsibility, the Tomaquag Museum is fostering the interrelationship of all

17

people and its accomplishments are eminently worthy of our gratitude and recognition; now,

18

therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates the Tomaquag Museum on being selected as a finalist for the 2016 National

2

Medal for Museum and Library Service. We moreover thank the museum's dedicated staff for

3

their efforts to engage and enlighten the citizenry of our state; and be it further

4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Lorén Spears, Executive Director, Tomaquag

6

Museum.
