A N   A C T

RELATING TO MILITARY AFFAIRS AND DEFENSE

     

     Introduced By: Senators Felag, Walaska, and Pichardo

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 30-28-1 of the General Laws in Chapter 30-28 entitled "Monuments

2

and Memorials" is hereby repealed.

     30-28-1. Designation of Veterans' Memorial Building. -- The building acquired by the

4

state for use as a state office building and formerly known as the Masonic Temple, located on

5

Francis Street in the city of Providence, shall be known and designated as the "Veterans'

6

Memorial Building."

     SECTION 2. Sections 30-28-2, 30-28-3 and 30-28-4 of the General Laws in Chapter 30-

8

28 entitled "Monuments and Memorials" are hereby amended to read as follows:

     30-28-2. Allocation of building space. -- The governor is authorized and empowered to

10

direct and advise the director of the department of administration to make available such space as

11

may reasonably be allocated in the Veterans' Memorial Building William F. Powers Building,

12

One Capitol Hill, Providence, RI or any other substantially equivalent space to be provided by the

13

department of administration to the united veterans' council for use as headquarters by the

14

following chartered veterans' organizations:

      (1) The American Legion;

16

      (2) Veterans of Foreign Wars;

17

      (3) Disabled American Veterans of World War I;

18

      (4) United Spanish War Veterans Military Women Across the Nation Unit 118;

19

      (5) American Veterans (AMVETS) of World War II;

      (6) Jewish War Veterans of Rhode Island;

      (7) The Marine Corps League;

3

      (8) The Italian American War Veterans of the United States, Incorporated;

4

      (9) The Franco-American War Veterans, Inc. Korean War Veterans;

5

      (10) Vietnam Veterans of America; and

6

      (11) Any other chartered veterans' organization.

     30-28-3. Organizations accommodated in memorial building Organizations

8

accommodated in The William F. Powers Building, One Capitol Hill, Providence, RI. -- The

9

director of administration shall direct the architect to include in his final plans such areas as may

10

be reasonably allocated to the following chartered veterans' organizations: The American legion;

11

veterans of foreign wars; Disabled American veterans of world war I; United Spanish war

12

veterans Korean War veterans; American veterans (AMVETS) of world war II; Jewish war

13

veterans of Rhode Island; The Marine corps league; Military Women Across the Nation Unit 118;

14

The Italian American war veterans of the United States, incorporated.

     30-28-4. Office equipment of veterans' organizations. -- Proper office equipment shall

16

be furnished and supplied for each state department of chartered veterans' organizations located in

17

the Veterans' Memorial Building William F. Powers Building, One Capitol Hill, Providence, RI

18

or any other substantially equivalent space to be provided by the department of administration

19

without cost to the organization.

     SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

RELATING TO MILITARY AFFAIRS AND DEFENSE

     This act would correct the law reflecting the relocation space for veterans' organizations

2

to the William F. Powers Building and would add additional chartered veterans' organizations to

3

the list of veterans' groups who are serviced.

4

     This act would take effect upon passage.
