S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING CLAUDIA LINHARES ON WINNING THE NEWPORT DAILY

NEWS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

     WHEREAS, Claudia Linhares, a lifelong resident of Tiverton, Rhode Island, has been

named as one of the winners of this year's Newport Daily News Community Service Award; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Linhares began her distinguished community service career back in

1977 when she became the President of the Tiverton Little League, a position she has held for

thirty-nine years. Her love for baseball began early, as a single mom of four children, when she

would take her ten-year-old son Randy Machedo to Little League practice. It was through the

game of baseball and Little League that she met her late husband, Arthur "Ozzie" Linhares. In a

one-year span in 1977, Claudia met and married her husband and became President of the

Tiverton Little League; and

     WHEREAS, In her 39 years as President of the Little League, Ms. Linhares has worked

tirelessly to promote the game she loves. Her efforts have ranged from taking care of the

mundane things such as attending district and state meetings to lining up sponsors, coaches and

managers. Thanks to her devotion and dedication, upwards of 420 kids play Little League

Baseball in Tiverton in a given season, all of them having fun while learning important life

lessons about the values of teamwork and responsibility; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Linhares has also served the citizens of Tiverton with honor, integrity

and distinction as a member of the Tiverton Town Council, for a total of twelve years; now,

therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates Ms. Claudia Linhares on being named as one of the winners of the Newport

Daily News Community Service Award. We wish her many more joyful Saturday mornings at the

ballpark watching kids play baseball and thank her for her many years of exemplary service to the

Tiverton community; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Claudia Linhares.
