CONGRATULATING THE PONAGANSET HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' HOCKEY TEAM ON | |
WINNING THE RHODE ISLAND BOYS' STATE DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Ponaganset Boys' Hockey Team had an outstanding 2015-2016 season, |
2 | compiling a sterling 21-1 record and easily winning the Rhode Island Boys' Hockey Division III |
3 | Title; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Ponaganset entered the State Tournament seeded first and easily dispatched |
5 | Warwick Vets in the first round, sweeping them two games to zero by winning the first game by |
6 | the score of 6 to 2, and winning the clinching game by shutting out Warwick Vets by the score of |
7 | 5 to 0, to reach a title series for the first time in nine years; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Ponaganset faced their arch-rivals, the West Warwick/Exeter/West |
9 | Greenwich co-op team for the state championship in games played at Brown University's Meehan |
10 | Auditorium. In the first game, a two to nothing victory for Ponaganset, the Chieftains were aided |
11 | by the superb play in net by goaltender Curtis Briggs, who was also named the Most Valuable |
12 | Player in the series, stopping 34 of the 35 shots he faced. The game winner in game one was |
13 | scored by Senior Nathan Morin. In the second game of the series, Ponaganset emerged victorious |
14 | by the score of 3 to 1 to sweep the series and win its first boys' hockey championship in sixteen |
15 | years; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Winning a state championship in a team sport is an extremely difficult feat |
17 | to accomplish and doing so requires that every member of the team give all of themselves to the |
18 | team and, at all times, put team needs and goals ahead of individual desires. The 2015-2016 |
19 | Ponaganset Boys' Hockey Team had those qualities in abundance as they were led all year by |

2 | Brett Marceau, Matthew Carlson, Quint Bonin, Drew Briggs, Matthew Mienertz, Ryan Watts, |
3 | Nathan Watts, Elijah Wiggill, Nikolaus Goff, Jake Pickersgill, Joshua Soares, Jacob Lincourt, |
4 | Joshua Dalessio, Thomas Caine, Dan Richardson, Nicholas Ferrucci, Tate Schaefer, and Curtis |
5 | Briggs. The team also benefitted all season from the exemplary coaching provided by Head |
6 | Coach, Daniel Morin, and Assistant Coach, David Plante; now, therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
8 | hereby congratulates the Ponaganset Boys' Hockey Team on winning the Rhode Island Boys' |
9 | State Division III Championship; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
11 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Daniel Morin, Head Coach, Ponaganset |
