S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING CLASSICAL HIGH SCHOOL ON BEING NAMED THE TOP HIGH

SCHOOL IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, U.S. News & World Report annually publishes its rankings of the top high

schools in each state. The rankings are based on the magazine's methodology, which is primarily

focused on two key principles: a high school must serve all of its students, both college bound

and non-college bound, and a school must produce results that are measurable and is successful in

its mission to educate its students; and

     WHEREAS, In 2016, Classical High School was named the top high school in Rhode

Island by U.S. News & World Report. Classical High School is a public school located in

Providence, Rhode Island. It has a very ethnically diverse student body of 1,133 and is a college

preparatory examination school. Classical challenges its students with a rich and challenging

program of study in the arts, sciences, languages and humanities, offers its students a wide range

of extracurricular activities, and expects them to meet the school's rigorous standards and

expectations; and

     WHEREAS, Indicators of excellence at Classical High School included such facts as 96

percent of its 2014 student body were accepted to college, sixty-four students were named AP

Scholars, seventeen were named AP Honor Scholars, thirty-two were named AP Scholars with

Distinction, and seven were named National Scholars. Also, the Classical Class of 2014 had three

National Merit Scholar Finalists, and one National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar; now,

therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates Classical High School on being named the top high school in the State of

Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Scott Barr, Principal, Classical High

School.
