HONORING DR. NANCY CARRIUOLO FOR HER DEDICATED SERVICE AS PRESIDENT | |
OF RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE | |

1 | WHEREAS, Dr. Nancy Carriuolo was named the ninth president of the state’s first public |
2 | institution of higher education, Rhode Island College (RIC), on May 12, 2008, by the Rhode |
3 | Island Board of Governors for Higher Education; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Dr. Carriuolo earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the State |
5 | College of New York at Brockport, and her Ph.D. from the State University of New York at |
6 | Buffalo. In addition, she attended the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, where she |
7 | completed post-doctoral studies in organizational behavior and management, fundraising, and |
8 | negotiation; and |
9 | WHEREAS, During her tenure at RIC, Dr. Carriuolo oversaw the construction of a $21 |
10 | million arts center at the college, and a $9 million addition to Fogarty Life Science, which will be |
11 | completed in the summer of 2016. In addition, the college received a $50 million bond to fund |
12 | renovations to Gaige Hall and Craig Lee Hall, as well as funding and donations to complete |
13 | myriad construction and modernization projects across the campus; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Academically, Dr. Carriuolo has initiated many innovative programs |
15 | including the college's first solo doctoral program, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, degree |
16 | programs in global studies, health care administration, medical imaging, youth development, and |
17 | environmental studies, and programs focusing on the STEM disciplines; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Prior to joining RIC, Dr. Carriuolo served as Deputy Commissioner and |
19 | Chief Academic Officer at the then Rhode Island Office of Higher Education, and in 2007-2008, |

1 | she served as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs at RIC; and |
2 | WHEREAS, In addition to her responsibilities at RIC, Dr. Carriuolo has worked with a |
3 | number of regional, national and international higher education and business organizations as a |
4 | consultant, is affiliated with several professional associations, and is a past president of the |
5 | National Association for Developmental Education. She is also the author of more than 30 |
6 | publications with regional, national or international audiences; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Carriuolo has amassed a plethora of awards and honors during her |
8 | distinguished career including being named as one of Rhode Island's 30 Women of Power by RI |
9 | Monthly and as Woman of the Year by GoLocalProv; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Following RIC's commencement, Dr. Carriuolo will step down as President |
11 | on May 21, 2016. Her dedication and efforts are directly responsible for creating our leaders of |
12 | tomorrow and she is eminently worthy of our recognition and gratitude; now, therefore be it |
13 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
14 | hereby honors and thanks Dr. Nancy Carriuolo for her dedicated service as President of Rhode |
15 | Island College. We moreover wish her much happiness, fulfillment, and success in all her future |
16 | endeavors; and be it further |
17 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
18 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Nancy Carriuolo. |
