RECOGNIZING THE PROVIDENCE CENTER FOR EMBODYING INNOVATION IN | |
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Providence Center was founded in 1969, with the mission "to help |
2 | people affected by mental health, behavioral health and substance use problems by providing |
3 | treatment and supportive services within a community setting"; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The Providence Center holds an unwavering commitment to a behavioral |
5 | health care system in which every individual who needs care will receive the broadest possible |
6 | array of services so that his or her unique needs are met; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Providence Center values innovative program development that is |
8 | responsive to the community's changing needs. Each year, it serves more than 13,000 adults, |
9 | children and families who have behavioral health needs. As the largest community-based |
10 | behavioral healthcare organization in the state, The Providence Center's service capacity is |
11 | extensive and provides the most comprehensive continuum of community-based services in |
12 | Rhode Island; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The Providence Center provides individualized treatment in the community- |
14 | in homes, in schools, and in neighborhoods, using evidence-based practices that help people |
15 | overcome barriers to wellness and success. Its approach to behavioral health care is one that is |
16 | comprehensive and client-centered; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Through various innovative programs, The Providence Center demonstrates |
18 | a commitment to creative approaches that meet the needs of those served. It offers over 40 |
19 | programs and wraparound services geared toward substance use, mental health and overall |

1 | wellness; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The Providence Center has earned numerous awards for its outstanding |
3 | innovation and community-serving programs including the 2016 National Council for Behavioral |
4 | Health Excellence in Behavioral Healthcare Management Award and the 2016 Scattergood |
5 | Foundation Innovation Award; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The Providence Center's innovative programs include HealthPath, a project |
7 | that works statewide to provide services and supports to those who have experience a psychiatric |
8 | hospitalization, a program whereby clinical therapists work in the Providence and Warwick |
9 | police departments, an intensive outpatient program staffed with a 100% Spanish-speaking team |
10 | of mental health professional who address clients addiction issues, the Anchor Learning |
11 | Academy, a recovery high school for adolescents who have experienced addiction, sought |
12 | treatment, and now prefer to pursue their high school education in a recovery-oriented |
13 | environment, and The Anchor Recovery Community Center program which has centers in |
14 | Pawtucket, Warwick, and within the Department of Corrections; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The Month of May is nationally observed as Mental Health Month and it is |
16 | fitting and just that The Providence Center's dedicated efforts, National Awards, and innovative |
17 | accomplishments be acknowledged and commended; now, therefore be it |
18 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
19 | hereby recognizes The Providence Center for embodying innovation in behavioral health care. |
20 | We moreover commend its staff and administration on being awarded the 2016 National Council |
21 | for Behavioral Health Excellence in Behavioral Healthcare Management Award and the 2016 |
22 | Scattergood Foundation Innovation Award; and be it further |
23 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
24 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Lisa P. Tomasso, Community Relations |
25 | Manager, The Providence Center. |
