S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES TO THE GIBB FAMILY ON THE PASSING OF DEACON

CLARENCE GIBB

     WHEREAS, Deacon Clarence Gibb, a man of unbending faith, was called home to be

2

with the Lord on Monday, May 9, 2016; and

3

     WHEREAS, Deacon Gibb was born in Manhattan, New York, on September 9, 1944. He

4

was the only child of Arthur Gibbs and Florence Gibbs. He was preceded in death by his wife of

5

thirty-four years, Jean F. Gibb; and

6

     WHEREAS, Deacon Gibb worked for many years for the Veterans' Administration

7

Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island. He was a tireless worker and a dedicated employee.

8

During these years of employment, he received a certificate of training, a commendation, and an

9

award for his special and unique contribution to the Mission of the Department of Veterans'

10

Affairs. He also was "Employee of the Quarter" in August of 1995 and September of 1999, and

11

was nominated for "Federal Employee of the Year" in 1999; and

12

     WHEREAS, Deacon Gibb was a member of the Congdon Street Baptist Church for many

13

years. He was baptized at the Church in June of 1983, and became a Deacon in January of 1999.

14

As a Deacon, he faithfully served the Lord, the congregants of the Church and the wider

15

community. He also served as a member of the Ushers Board, the Sexton Ministry, the Prison

16

Ministry, and the Men's Choir; and

17

     WHEREAS, Deacon Gibb served our nation with honor and integrity as a member of the

18

United States Army from 1962 to 1964. He also served as a Cub Master for Pack 18 of the Boy

19

Scouts of America, as an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and as a member of

the Laborer's International Union of North America. Deacon Gibb also served at the State House

2

as a doorman for the Rhode Island Senate. Additionally, he was an avid sports fan, loved his cars,

3

and in his spare time enjoyed watching old westerns; and

4

     WHEREAS, Deacon Gibb is survived by his sister-in-law Barbara Smith. He also leaves

5

behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, other family members, and many

6

friends; now, therefore be it

7

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

8

hereby expresses its condolences to the Gibb Family on the passing of Deacon Clarence Gibb;

9

and be it further

10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Barbara Smith.
