S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE PONAGANSET BOYS' BASEBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE

RHODE ISLAND DIVISION II BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

     WHEREAS, The Ponaganset Boys' Baseball team had an outstanding 2016 regular

season, compiling a sterling 15-3 League record and tying Tiverton High School for first place in

the Division; and

     WHEREAS, Ponaganset rolled through the early rounds of the Rhode Island Divisional

State Playoffs, defeating Tolman in the first game and later defeating Mount St. Charles to

advance to the State Tournament championship round. The Chieftains were led throughout the

playoffs by the dynamic pitching provided by their League Cy Young Award Winner Mike

Viveiros, and the slugging provided by MVP Award Winner Tyler Flynn; and

     WHEREAS, The first two games of the Division II State Baseball finals played at

McCoy Stadium against The Prout School were thrilling low scoring affairs, with Ponaganset

emerging victorious in the first game by the score of 1 to 0, and Prout winning the second game

by the score of 2 to 1; and

     WHEREAS, In the pressure packed deciding game, Ponaganset pulled away to win the

championship by the score of 4 to 1, thanks to the timely hitting provided by Billy Butler and the

clutch pitching provided by Mike Viveiros who battled hard throughout the game, pitching out of

tough jams and only surrendering one run to lead the Chieftains to the first Rhode Island State

Baseball Title in the long and storied history of Ponaganset High School athletics; and

     WHEREAS, The Ponaganset baseball team was also awarded the 2016 Sportsmanship

Award by the Rhode Island Umpires Association and the Division II Coaches Association; and

     WHEREAS, Winning a State Championship in a team sport is an incredibly difficult

achievement, one that requires that every member of the team give his all and put team goals

ahead of personal aspirations. Ponaganset was blessed to have an abundance of these kinds of

players as they were led all season by the significant contributions provided by Billy Butler,

Brenton Travers, Chris DiPetrillo, Curtis Briggs, Devon Atkinson, Jake Ferrucci, John Biafore,

Joshua Greene, Julian Poirier, Ken Desrosiers, Mark "Alec" Gardella, Michael Viveiros, Peter

Fiore, Tyler Flynn and Ty Parrillo. The Chieftains were also aided all season by the sterling

leadership and coaching provided by Head Coach Anthony Parrillo, and Assistant Coaches Brian

Gendreau and Pete Keefe; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Ponaganset Boys' Baseball Team on winning the

Division II Rhode State Baseball Championship; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Anthony Parrillo, Head Baseball Coach,

Ponaganset High School.
