A N   A C T

RELATING TO INSURANCE

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Ajello, Corvese, Lima, Kazarian, and Messier

     Date Introduced: January 22, 2016

     Referred To: House Corporations

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 27-18 of the General Laws entitled "Accident and Sickness

2

Insurance Policies" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

3

     27-18-82. Mandated coverage for pregnant applicants. – No pregnant applicant for

4

insurance coverage regulated by this chapter shall be denied coverage due to her pregnancy.

5

Coverage shall be effective as of the first of the month in which her pregnancy is verified by a

6

licensed health care practitioner.

     SECTION 2. Chapter 27-19 of the General Laws entitled "Nonprofit Hospital Service

8

Corporations" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     27-19-73. Mandated coverage for pregnant applicants. -- No pregnant applicant for

10

insurance coverage regulated by this chapter shall be denied coverage due to her pregnancy.

11

Coverage shall be effective as of the first of the month in which her pregnancy is verified by a

12

licensed health care practitioner.

     SECTION 3. Chapter 27-20 of the General Laws entitled "Nonprofit Medical Service

14

Corporations" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     27-20-69. Mandated coverage for pregnant applicants. -- No pregnant applicant for

16

insurance coverage regulated by this chapter shall be denied coverage due to her pregnancy.

Coverage shall be effective as of the first of the month in which her pregnancy is verified by a

18

licensed health care practitioner.

     SECTION 4. Chapter 27-41 of the General Laws entitled "Health Maintenance

Organizations" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     27-41-86. Mandated coverage for pregnant applicants. -- No pregnant applicant for

3

insurance coverage regulated by this chapter shall be denied coverage due to her pregnancy.

Coverage shall be effective as of the first of the month in which her pregnancy is verified by a

5

licensed health care practitioner.

6

     SECTION 5. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would provide that no pregnant applicant for medical insurance coverage would

be denied coverage due to her pregnancy.
