RELATING TO EDUCATION - CURRICULUM

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Reilly, McNamara, Trillo, Serpa, and Edwards

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-22 of the General Laws entitled "Curriculum [See Title 16

Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby amended by adding thereto

the following section:

     16-22-13.1. Instruction in financial literacy. – (a) The department of elementary and

5

secondary education shall incorporate financial literacy education into the board of education's

6

basic education program regulations. The school committees of the several cities, towns, and

7

school districts shall provide for the incorporation of mandatory instruction of students in grades

8

nine (9) through twelve (12) on the subject of financial literacy. The completion of a course of

9

instruction on financial literacy shall be required prior to graduation from high school.

     (b) For the purposes of this section "financial literacy" means the ability to use

11

knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
