CONGRATULATING MEGAN ROY ON RECEIVING THE 2017 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF

COMMUNITY AWARD

     WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is the largest youth recognition

2

program in the United States based entirely on volunteer service. All public and private middle

3

schools and high schools, as well as Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, YMCAs,

4

American Red Cross Chapters and HandsON Network affiliates are eligible to select someone to

5

apply for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award. These honorees are then judged by an

6

independent panel based on criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact and personal

7

growth with one high school student and one middle school student being chosen from each state

8

and the District of Columbia; and

9

     WHEREAS, Since the Prudential Spirit of Community program began, more than

10

115,000 young volunteers have been honored at the local, state and national level. The program is

11

also conducted in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, India, China and Brazil; and

12

      WHEREAS, Megan Roy, a seventeen-year-old senior attending Westerly High School,

13

was chosen to receive the 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. The independent panel of

14

judges were impressed by her longtime commitment to volunteering, in which she donated

15

hundreds of hours of her time over the past six years serving her community and assisting people

16

in need. Megan volunteered at the local food pantry where she packaged food and volunteered in

17

the thrift shop; and

18

     WHEREAS, Megan will join 102 State Honorees in Washington, D.C., where they will

19

tour our nation's capital landmarks, meet youth volunteers from across the globe, attend a gala

awards ceremony at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, and visit with their

2

congressional representatives on Capitol Hill. On May 8, 2017, ten of the State Honorees, five

3

middle school students and five high school students, will be named America's top youth

4

volunteers of 2017. These distinguished national honorees will receive an additional $5000 grant,

5

gold medallions, crystal trophies, and a $5000 grant from the Prudential Foundation to be

6

awarded to the nonprofit charitable organization of their choice; now, therefore be it

7

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

8

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Megan Roy on receiving the 2017 Prudential Spirit

9

of Community Award. We wish her good luck at the competition and ceremonies in Washington

10

D.C., and continued success in attaining all her goals and aspirations in the future; and be it

11

further

12

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

13

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Miss Megan Roy.
