AND RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF MARCH AS "BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS | |

1 | WHEREAS, Brain Injury Awareness Month and Brain Week Rhode Island have been |
2 | organized to coincide with the internationally observed Brain Awareness Month, which is a |
3 | global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Cure Alliance for Mental Illness, in conjunction with presenting sponsor, |
5 | the Brown Institute for Brain Science, and additional support provided by the University of |
6 | Rhode Island's George and Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience, will be presenting creative and |
7 | family-friendly events ranging from opportunities to learn about brain research to fun brain- |
8 | themed activities for all ages and the Brown University chapter of SACNAS has organized an |
9 | event for high school and middle school students that will include a brain art contest and science |
10 | fair; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Thousands of Rhode Islanders are affected by diseases of the brain, |
12 | including depression, stroke, schizophrenia, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, |
13 | and other neurological disorders, and brain injuries including concussions; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Brain Injury Awareness Month and Brain Week Rhode Island are a |
15 | collaborative effort that will not only help to focus and raise awareness about the importance of |
16 | brain research, but will also spark excitement for neuroscience and the growing biomedical sector |
17 | that holds great promise for those suffering with these devastating conditions and for our state's |
18 | future; now, therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |

1 | Providence Plantations hereby proclaims March 11th through 19th, 2017, as the second annual |
2 | "Brain Week Rhode Island” and recognizes the month of March as "Brain Injury Awareness |
3 | Month." We furthermore encourage all Rhode Islanders to participate in the week-long planned |
4 | activities highlighting the wonders of the brain and the observation of Brain Injury Awareness |
5 | Month; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Hakon Heimer, Co-founder and CEO, Cure |
8 | Alliance for Mental Illness, Diane Lipscombe, Director, Brown Institute for Brain Science, and |
9 | Paula Grammas, Executive Director, George and Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience. |
