	RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES -- EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES

	It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
1	SECTION 1. Chapter 31-23 of the General Laws entitled "Equipment and Accessories
2	Generally" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:
3	31-23-42.3. Safety belts on school buses.
4	(a) Every new school bus as defined in §31-1-3 purchased or leased for use in the state
5	shall be equipped with safety belts for the operator and each passenger seat.
6	(b) Any person who is an operator or a passenger in a school bus equipped with a safety
7	belt shall wear a safety belt while the vehicle is in operation on any of the roads, streets or
8	highways of this state.
9	SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

1	This act would require all new school buses purchased or leased be equipped with seat
2	belts for each passenger and operator seat and would further require mandatory safety belt use by
3	the school bus operator and each passenger.
4	This act would take effect upon passage.
