A N   A C T

RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES -- ROAD TEST

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 31-10-22 of the General Laws in Chapter 31-10 entitled "Operators'

2

and Chauffeurs' Licenses" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     31-10-22. Road test.

     (a) All applicants for a motor vehicle license shall pass a motor vehicle road test as

5

prescribed by the administrator of the division of motor vehicles in a motor vehicle supplied by

6

the applicant or in a dual controlled motor vehicle supplied by the state. In the case of the

7

examination for a chauffeur to operate a truck, tractor, trailer, tractor semi-trailer, bus, or other

8

vehicle for hire or a person who will operate only a vehicle equipped with automatic shift or a

9

person who is disabled and requires the use of a specially equipped motor vehicle, those persons

10

shall be examined in vehicles furnished by them.

     (b) At the option of any person who is disabled, the road test shall be administered by the

12

local office of the division of motor vehicles nearest that person's home. A fee of twenty-five

13

dollars ($25) twenty-six dollars and fifty cents ($26.50) shall be charged for all road tests,

14

including repeat road tests, following failure of a road test.

15

     (c) Any person who is bilingual or who is not proficient in the English language, shall

16

have the option of being assisted during the road test by a translator of their native language who

17

is at least eighteen (18) years of age. Said translator shall be provided by the person taking the

18

road test, and shall be provided at the sole expense of the person taking the road test.

     (d) A fee of twenty-six dollars and fifty cents ($26.50) shall be charged for all road tests,

including repeat road tests, following failure of a road test.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect on January 1, 2018.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

OF

RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES -- ROAD TEST

     This act would, at no cost to the state, allow a person who is bilingual or not proficient in

2

the English language, to be assisted in their road test by a translator of their native language who

3

is at least eighteen (18) years of age.

4

     This act would take effect on January 1, 2018.
