EXPRESSING SINCERE CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF ROSWELL S. | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with deep regret that this House has learned of the passing of Roswell |
2 | S. Bosworth, Jr., a retired East Bay Newspapers Publisher, aviator in the Army Air Force, skilled |
3 | sailor, a leader in his community, and a man who verily personified the definition of |
4 | "Renaissance man"; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Born in Bristol, Roswell Bosworth was the son of the late Roswell S. and |
6 | Edith Bosworth and the brother of Nancy Crutchfield. He was the beloved husband of Marcia |
7 | Walls Bosworth for 42 years, and the devoted father of Peter Cook Bosworth and Barbara Russell |
8 | Bosworth, and the step-father of Matthew Hayes and Jonathan Hayes. He was also the proud |
9 | grandfather of Sarah, Andrew, Emilie, Colin, Rebecca, Kaitryn, Harley, and Zelda, and one great- |
10 | grandchild, James; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Following in his father's footsteps, Mr. Bosworth began on the road to |
12 | reporting when he was named "Class Journalist" while attending Colt Memorial High School, |
13 | was made an editor of the college paper while earning his degree at the University of Rhode |
14 | Island, and all the while, was learning the various aspects of the family's newspaper business; and |
15 | WHEREAS, When his father retired as editor and publisher of the Bristol Phoenix in |
16 | 1974, Mr. Bosworth was ready to take the helm. Over the ensuing years, he grew the company, |
17 | with the addition of the Barrington Times, the Warren Times-Gazette, the Sakonnet Times, and |
18 | the East Bay Classifieds; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Gifted with exceptional abilities in myriad areas, Mr. Bosworth was one of |

1 | the founders and had served as President of the New England Press Association and the Suburban |
2 | Newspapers of America. In addition, he was conferred by various organizations with a plethora of |
3 | awards such as election to the Hall of Fame from the New England Press Association and the |
4 | Rhode Island Press Association. He was also honored as the recipient of the distinguished Dean |
5 | Lesher Award and the Horace Greely Award, and was presented with a membership to the Order |
6 | of Prince Henry the Navigator by the Portuguese government, to name but a few; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The power and intensity of Ros Bosworth's life not only informed and |
8 | educated the community but also had a huge impact through his vision for transforming the very |
9 | land and quality of life in Bristol. He was a key supporter in the establishment of Colt State Park, |
10 | Independence Park, and the construction of the town dock at Rockwell Park, and he was a leader |
11 | in the preservation and transformation of Bristol's Linden Place; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The exploits of Ros Bosworth's life prove to be a weighty tome. He knew |
13 | the infinite value of the people he met and he innately knew what was right and just. Memories of |
14 | this remarkable man, who helped to transform and shape the diverse structure of reporting and his |
15 | community have left an indelible mark on the people and Town of Bristol and our state; now, |
16 | therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
18 | Providence Plantations hereby expresses deepest condolences on the passing of Roswell S. |
19 | Bosworth, Jr.; and be it further |
20 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
21 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Marcia Walls Bosworth and Family. |
