THANKING AND CONGRATULATING THE HONORABLE M. TERESA PAIVA WEED | |
FOR HER DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed was born and raised in the City of |
2 | Newport. She is the daughter of Arthur and Marie Paiva, who were both very active in the |
3 | community, the mother of Nicole Beede, and was married to the late Mark Weed. She is a |
4 | graduate of Rogers High School and received her Bachelor's degree from Providence College and |
5 | her Juris Doctor from Catholic University; and |
6 | WHEREAS, In January of 1993, the Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed was sworn in as a |
7 | Rhode Island Senator, representing the people of Newport and Jamestown in District 13, a |
8 | position she has been re-elected to and held for more than twenty-four years; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Throughout her years in the Senate, the Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed |
10 | worked diligently on myriad issues, including education, health care and economic growth, and |
11 | steadily earned the admiration of her colleagues and advancement within Senate leadership. She |
12 | served as the Senate's first female Chair of the Judiciary Committee, as Deputy Chair of the |
13 | Finance Subcommittee on Public Safety and the Environment, as Vice Chair of the Senate |
14 | Finance Committee, and as Rhode Island's first female Senate Majority Leader; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In January of 2009, the Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed was elected by |
16 | her fellow Senators to serve as President of the Senate, the first woman in Rhode Island's history |
17 | to serve in that capacity, and a position she held for more than eight years; and |
18 | WHEREAS, On March 22nd of 2017, President Paiva Weed announced her pending |
19 | departure from the General Assembly. She has been named President of the Hospital Association |

1 | of Rhode Island, the first woman to hold this title and a richly deserved accomplishment; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed will leave an indelible mark on the |
3 | colleagues and legislators who have had the good fortune to work by her side. Her numerous |
4 | years of devoted service to the Rhode Island Senate and the citizens of the Ocean State serve as |
5 | an inspiration and a role model of conscientious civic service; now, therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
7 | Providence Plantations hereby thanks and congratulates the Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed as |
8 | she embarks on the next chapter of her life and service to the people of Rhode Island as President |
9 | of the Hospital Association of Rhode Island. We wish her much success, happiness and good |
10 | health; and be it further |
11 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
12 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed. |
