CONGRATULATING C.J. CHIVERS ON BEING A 2017 PULITZER PRIZE AWARD

WINNER

     WHEREAS, The Pulitzer Prize awards for excellence in journalism and the arts are

2

awarded in 14 designated categories including reporting, photography, cartooning, criticism and

3

commentary, and seven categories for the arts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and

4

music; and

5

     WHEREAS, C.J. 'Chris' Chivers, currently a reporter with The New York Times, and

6

formerly a Providence Journal reporter, was awarded journalism's highest honor, a 2017 Pulitzer

7

Prize in the category of Feature Writing; and

8

     WHEREAS, As a reporter with The New York Times, Mr. Chivers was awarded his

9

2017 Pulitzer for his illuminating story on a 24-year old Marine Corps veteran's postwar descent

10

into violence after returning from Afghanistan; and

11

     WHEREAS, Mr. Chivers is a graduate of Cornell University and the Columbia School of

12

Journalism. He served as an infantry officer in the United States Marines during the first Gulf

13

War, in peacekeeping operations during the Los Angeles riots, and was honorably discharged as a

14

captain; and

15

     WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Columbia, Mr. Chivers joined the staff of the

16

Providence Journal, where he covered North Providence and Providence politics. During his

17

years with the Journal, he won the acclaim of his fellow reporters and was honored with a

18

Livingston Award for International Reporting. He is also the author of "The Gun," a historical

19

work; and

     WHEREAS, Often referred to by colleagues as "the best war correspondent of his

2

generation," Mr. Chivers also won a Pulitzer in 2009 as part of a team of New York Times

3

reporters "honored for their dispatches from Pakistan and Afghanistan"; and

4

     WHEREAS, Currently, Mr. Chivers makes his home in South Kingstown with his wife

5

Suzanne Keating and their five children and is an avid fisherman in his rare spare time; and

6

     WHEREAS, With a comprehensive and thoughtful approach Mr. Chivers' reporting and

7

writing have contributed fresh insights into myriad areas. He is eminently deserving of the

8

accolades and regard he has been afforded and has fully distinguished himself as a person worthy

9

of our recognition and admiration; now, therefore be it

10

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

11

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates and honors C.J. Chivers on the prestigious honor of

12

being selected as a 2017 Pulitzer Prize award winner. We furthermore wish him the very best

13

health, happiness, and continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it further

14

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

15

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. C.J. Chivers.
