H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING AND CELEBRATING THE HONORABLE GEORGE A. CASTRO

FOR HIS LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY

     WHEREAS, The Honorable George A. Castro was born in Providence, Rhode Island and

2

graduated from Central High School and Providence College. As a young man, he was a

3

celebrated boxer who went undefeated, 20-0, in his boxing career; and

4

     WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Castro has been a tireless advocate on behalf of the

5

African-American community and all those who have historically been pushed to the margins of

6

American Society. As a Media Specialist by profession and a successful longtime host of a radio

7

program, Mr. Castro has skillfully used the techniques and strategies of public persuasion to

8

further the interests and advance the rights of the minority community; and

9

     WHEREAS, The Honorable George A. Castro was elected in 1980 to serve in the Rhode

10

Island House of Representatives and served his constituents with integrity, distinction and honor

11

for eighteen years. He was a member of the Finance Committee and gave voice to those who have

12

historically been under-represented in American life; and

13

     WHEREAS, Mr. Castro has served as the Chairman of the Martin Luther King, Jr.

14

Holiday Commission, and has served on the boards of the Nickerson House and the John Hope

15

Settlement House. He also served as Chairman of the Permanent Advisory Group on Boxing and

16

Wrestling and as a member of the N.A.A.C.P., the Cape Verdean American Cultural Exchange

17

Commission, the Washington Park Citizens Association, and the Black Heritage Association; and

18

     WHEREAS, Mr. Castro is a devoted father to Valentino Lucky Freeman, Michael

19

Freeman, Brian Castro and Regina Moura. He was also the father of the late Keith Freeman and

Terri Castro; now, therefore be it

2

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

3

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates and celebrates the Honorable George A. Castro for

4

his lifetime of service to the African-American community; and be it further

5

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

6

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Valentino Lucky Freeman, Michael Freeman,

7

Brian Castro, and Regina Moura.
