EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF WALTER S. FELDMAN | |

1 | It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of renowned artist and |
2 | Professor Walter S. Feldman on May 20, 2017 at the age of 92. He had been the loving husband |
3 | of Barbara Feldman for 67 years; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Walter Feldman was born in 1925, the son of the late Hyman and Fannie |
5 | Feldman. After graduating from high school, he attended the Yale School of Fine Arts before he |
6 | joined the United States Army, where he served our nation with honor and valor for two years. |
7 | He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry |
8 | Badge; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Feldman graduated from college after the war and in 1953, he was |
10 | appointed to the art faculty at Brown University, where he served for more than fifty years, |
11 | retiring in 2007 with the title of Visual Arts Professor Emeritus; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Feldman was a gifted artist who had his work exhibited in many one- |
13 | man shows across the globe in prominent places such as New York City, Boston, London, |
14 | Mexico City and Milan. He received many accolades, awards and critical praise for his body of |
15 | work, a collection that spanned more than seven decades. His art was greatly influenced by his |
16 | experiences and the injuries he suffered in World War II, and the courage and conviction with |
17 | which he lived his life was a constant source of strength and inspiration to his family and many |
18 | friends; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Mr. Feldman was also a talented and creative book designer and publisher. |
20 | Since 1985, he designed and published books under the Ziggurat Press imprint he created. His |

1 | books are in more than 150 public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the |
2 | Albert and Victoria Museum. In his honor, Brown University dedicated the Walter Feldman Book |
3 | Arts studio at the John Hay Library in 2005; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 2014, Mr. Feldman established the Walter Feldman Fellowship for |
5 | Emerging Artists, a fellowship administered by the Arts and Business Council of Greater Boston |
6 | that exhibits the work of fellowship recipients in the Walter Feldman Gallery. He was a beloved |
7 | figure within the artistic and academic communities who will live on forever in the memory of his |
8 | loved ones and the many people who benefited from his generosity; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Feldman is also survived by his sons Steven and Mark, his daughter-in- |
10 | law Gloria Barone Rosanio, his granddaughter Kaitlyn Petit, his two great-granddaughters Payton |
11 | and Avery Petit, and his many nieces and nephews; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
13 | Providence Plantations hereby expresses its condolences on the passing of Mr. Walter S. |
14 | Feldman; and be it further |
15 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
16 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Barbara Feldman and Family. |
