CONGRATULATING ST. PETER SCHOOL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ON

SUCCESSFULLY ADVANCING TO THE NATIONAL HISTORY FAIR COMPETITION

     WHEREAS, National History Day (NHD) is a nonprofit organization based in College

2

Park, Maryland. Since 1974, NHD has operated an annual project-based academic contest for

3

students in grades 6-12. The theme for the 2017 competition is "Taking a Stand in History"; and

4

     WHEREAS, The National History Fair Competition is a week-long event, that includes

5

nearly 3,000 students from across the United States as well as Guam, American Samoa, Puerto

6

Rico, and international schools in China, Korea, South Asia, and Central America. More than half

7

a million students compete to win a chance to participate in the National competition; and

8

     WHEREAS, After spending months on research and preparation under the guidance of

9

their Social Studies teacher, Nancy Moreira, and English Language Arts teacher, Lisa Der

10

Manouelian, students from St. Peter School, in Warwick, entered their projects in National

11

History Day Rhode Island, held on April 29, 2017. After a vigorous competition that included

12

evaluations from professional historians and educators, three projects were chosen to proceed to

13

the National Contest to be held at the University of Maryland at College Park in June of 2017;

14

and

15

     WHEREAS, The winning entrants were Phoebe White and Andrew Cavanagh, grade 8

16

students, who entered "Mother Jones: Taking a Stand with the Miners" in the Group

17

Documentary category, Samantha Galasso, grade 8 student, who entered "Native Americans v.

18

Jackson: Taking a Stand Against the Indian Removal Act" in the Individual Website category,

19

and Aidan Moreira, grade 7 student, who entered "Mahatma Gandhi Takes a Stand Against the

British" in the Individual Documentary category; and

2

     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth who,

3

through their talents and unflagging commitment to excellence, have distinguished themselves in

4

both academia and in their communities. These students exemplify everything that young people

5

can achieve and they are truly deserving of our acknowledgement and praise; now, therefore be it

6

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

7

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates St. Peter School members Phoebe White, Andrew

8

Cavanagh, Samantha Galasso, Aidan Moreira and teachers Nancy Moreira, and Lisa Der

9

Manouelian on advancing to the National History Fair and wishes them continued success at both

10

the upcoming event and in all their future endeavors; and be it further

11

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

12

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Phoebe White, Andrew Cavanagh, Samantha

13

Galasso, Aidan Moreira, Nancy Moreira, and Lisa Der Manouelian.
