IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2017

____________

H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING KRISTIN HAYES-LEITE ON BEING NAMED THE RHODE ISLAND

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Introduced By: Representatives McEntee, Tanzi, Craven, O'Brien, and Knight

     Date Introduced: June 06, 2017

Referred To: House read and passed

1

WHEREAS, Kristin Hayes-Leite, the Social Studies Department Chair at Narragansett

2

High School, has been named the Rhode Island Teacher of the Year. She was presented with the

3

award by Governor Raimondo and Education Commissioner Ken Wagner in a surprise ceremony

4

held in the school gymnasium where the audience was told by the Governor that "She is a leader,

5

she is innovative, she is compassionate, and she is completely committed to her students"; and

6

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hayes-Leite is a graduate of Franklin Pierce College and Rhode Island

7

College, where she received a Master's degree in teaching and reading. She has worked at

8

Narragansett High School for sixteen years and in addition to her teaching duties, has helped to

9

create new elective courses, has assisted with extracurricular activities, and has been a member of

10

the school's Fuse Architect pilot team; and

11

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hayes-Leite is a member of the National Council on the Social

12

Studies, the Rhode Island Society of Technology Educators, and the International Reading

14

Mann Abraham Lincoln Fellowship in 2010. Mrs. Hayes-Leite will now represent Rhode Island

15

in the National Teacher of the Year competition. During the 2017-2018 school year she will help

16

to develop policy and support education with the Rhode Island Department of Education; and

17

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hayes-Leite has a deep love for learning and the learning process. She

18

cares deeply for each of her students and works tirelessly to help all of them reach their full

potential. She is an innovative educator who is not afraid to get outside of her comfort zone and

1

try new ideas and approaches in and outside the classroom. Mrs. Hayes-Leite is also someone

2

who has had to overcome many challenges in her own life, and it is her resiliency, strength of

3

character and deeply abiding commitment to her students that makes her a teacher who can relate

4

to her students and make them understand how much can truly be accomplished when one never

5

gives up in life. Perhaps Narragansett High School Senior Joe Lebeck summed up best her impact

6

on her students when he said about her, "What makes Mrs. Hayes-Leite so phenomenal at her job

7

is her ability to get the most out of her students"; now, therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

9

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Mrs. Kristin Hayes-Leite of Narragansett High
