RELATING TO EDUCATION - CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

     

     Introduced By: Senators Lombardo, Metts, Cote, Sheehan, and Morgan

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-45.1 of the General Laws entitled "Career and Technical

2

Education [See Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby

3

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     16-45.1-4. Career and Technical education internships for younger students.

5

     (a) Any student between sixteen (16) and eighteen (18) years of age, and in their junior or

6

senior year in a secondary school, may participate in a career and technical education internship

7

or teacher supervised job site training program provided the following factors are met:

8

     (1) The student attends and is interning at or through a career and technical education

9

program;

10

     (2) The proposed internship is part of the career and technical education program, either

11

at or through said program; and

12

     (3) The appropriate educational advisors, counselors or instructor determine that the

13

student is suitable to participate in the internship for which they have applied and that the student

14

has the necessary educational background, experience and personal maturity to engage in such

15

internship.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

RELATING TO EDUCATION - CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

     This act would permit children between sixteen (16) and eighteen (18) years of age, and

2

in their junior or senior year who are attending career and technical education centers, to

3

participate in career and technical internships; or teacher supervised job site training programs at

4

or through said education center; provided, that the students are deemed to have the necessary

5

educational background, experience and maturity.

6

     This act would take effect upon passage.
