RELATING TO MOTOR VEHICLES - ROAD TEST LICENSE APPLICANTS

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 31-10-22 of the General Laws in Chapter 31-10 entitled "Operators'

and Chauffeurs' Licenses" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     31-10-22. Road test.

     (a) All applicants for a motor vehicle license shall pass a motor vehicle road test as

5

prescribed by the administrator of the division of motor vehicles in a motor vehicle supplied by

6

the applicant or in a dual controlled motor vehicle supplied by the state. In the case of the

7

examination for a chauffeur to operate a truck, tractor, trailer, tractor semi-trailer, bus, or other

8

vehicle for hire or a person who will operate only a vehicle equipped with automatic shift or a

9

person who is disabled and requires the use of a specially equipped motor vehicle, those persons

10

shall be examined in vehicles furnished by them. At the option of any person who is disabled, the

11

road test shall be administered by the local office of the division of motor vehicles nearest that

12

person's home. A fee of twenty-five dollars ($25) shall be charged for all road tests, including

13

repeat road tests, following failure of a road test.

     (b) Any applicant for a motor vehicle license who has difficulty understanding the

15

English language, may during the road test, be accompanied by an interpreter, who may translate

16

the road test examiner's directions to the applicant. The interpreter shall be eighteen (18) years of

17

age or older.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would allow driver's license applicants who have difficulty understanding the

2

English language to be accompanied by an interpreter during their road test, who is at least

3

eighteen (18) years of age.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
