A N   A C T

RELATING TO CRIMINAL LAW - PAROLE BOARD

     

     Introduced By: Senator James E. Doyle

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 13-8-1 of the General Laws in Chapter 13-8 entitled "Parole" is

hereby amended to read as follows:

     13-8-1. Parole board -- Appointment and terms of members.

     Within the department of corrections there shall be a parole board consisting of seven (7)

5

qualified electors of the state appointed by the governor. In the month of January in each year, the

6

governor shall appoint one or more members of the board to serve in place of members whose

7

terms have expired, for a term of three (3) years, and until his, her, or their successors have been

8

appointed and qualified. No appointee, including the chairperson, shall serve more than three (3)

9

terms. This section shall apply prospectively to all new appointments and re-appointments.

10

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would require that parole board members serve no more than three (3) terms.

The act would apply prospectively to new appointments and reappointments.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
