J O I N T   R E S O L U T I O N

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION OF $100,000 TO THE TRINITY REPERTORY COMPANY

TO IMPLEMENT THE PROJECT DISCOVERY PROGRAM

     WHEREAS, During FY17, the State of Rhode Island celebrated the 50th Anniversary of

Project Discovery by investing in the Grade 11 Project pilot at Trinity Rep; and

3

     WHEREAS, At least 42 Rhode Island high schools have participated in the Grade 11

4

Project to take part in an open forum for students to gain a deeper understanding of the content

5

and context of plays and their production; and

6

     WHEREAS, Project Discovery uses theater to teach students about empathy, conflict

7

resolution, creativity and the human experience, while also providing reinforcement of core

8

curricular subjects, and research shows that the skills and attributes demanded by 21st century

9

employers are instilled through arts learning experiences; and

10

     WHEREAS, With a grant of $100,000 from the State of Rhode Island, matched by

11

private fundraising, Rhode Island high school students will experience a free professional, fully

12

produced theatrical performance with wraparound learning support; now, therefore be it

13

     RESOLVED, That there is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the treasury not

14

otherwise appropriated for the fiscal year 2017-2018, the sum of one hundred thousand dollars

15

($100,000) to the Trinity Repertory Company to implement the Project Discovery Program; and

16

the state controller is hereby authorized and directed to draw his orders upon the general treasurer

17

for the payment of said sum, upon receipt of properly authenticated vouchers.
