A N   A C T

     RELATING TO EDUCATION - TUITION FOR ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-59 of the General Laws entitled "Board of Governors for Higher

Education [See Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     16-59-9.2. Military tuition waiver.

     Notwithstanding any other provision of the general or public laws to the contrary, an

applicant who is a member of the armed forces or reserves of the United States and is currently

stationed in Rhode Island, shall be exempt from paying nonresident tuition at Rhode Island public

universities, colleges or community colleges. The council on postsecondary education shall

prescribe rules and regulations as may be necessary for the implementation of this section.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would grant instate tuition status at state operated schools to active duty and

reserve members stationed in Rhode Island.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
