S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING VERA LATORRE ON THE JOYOUS OCCASION OF HER 107TH

BIRTHDAY

     WHEREAS, Vera Verdi was born more than a century ago, on March 27th of 1910. That

same year, the United States was comprised of only 46 states, William Howard Taft was serving

as the 27th President of the United States, bread was only five cents a loaf, and the average work

week consisted of six 12-hour days; and

     WHEREAS, Vera grew up in a large and loving family in the Federal Hill section of

Providence. She had seven siblings, Gino, Lester, Thomas, Evelyn, Helen, Josephine and

Theresa; and

     WHEREAS, Upon marrying Ernest LaTorre, Vera moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Together, Vera and Ernest were blessed with four children, Lillian, Vilma, Carmen and Ernest Jr.;

and

     WHEREAS, Vera was employed at Rolo Jewelry for fifteen years. In 1958, after twenty-

six years of marriage, Ernest passed away and Vera returned to her roots in Federal Hill. She

currently makes her home in Smithfield with her son, Ernest; and

     WHEREAS, In 1910, the average life expectancy for a woman born that year was a little

under 52 years. To the good fortune of all who know and love Vera LaTorre, she has more than

doubled that figure. Her wealth of knowledge, gentle spirit and overall exuberance for life has

enriched the lives of those around her, and we are honored to join in the celebration of her 107th

Birthday; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby warmly welcomes Vera LaTorre to the State House and joins her family and friends in

wishing her a very joyous 107th Birthday. We moreover hope she enjoys continued health and

much happiness for many years to come; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Vera LaTorre.
