     STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2017

____________

S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE TIVERTON BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE

2017 RHODE ISLAND BOYS' BASKETBALL DIVISION III TOURNAMENT, AND

CONGRATULATING THE TIVERTON GIRLS' CHEERLEADING TEAM ON WINNING

THE 2017 RHODE ISLAND CHEERLEADING SMALL DIVISION STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Introduced By: Senators Felag, DiPalma, Seveney, Ruggerio, and Algiere

     Date Introduced: March 29, 2017

Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration

1

WHEREAS, The Tiverton Boys' Basketball Team, led all season by the superb coaching

2

provided by Head Coach Dave Landoch, dominated their Division in the regular season on the

3

way to compiling a perfect 17 and 0 record; and

4

WHEREAS, Tiverton entered the Rhode Island Division III Tournament as the 1st seed

5

and, after receiving a bye in the preliminaries round, thrashed Central Falls in the Quarter-Finals

6

by the score of 75 to 40. In the Semi-Finals against Burrillville, the Tigers rode a tenacious

7

defense to victory, holding Burrillville to a miniscule 9 for 54 shooting performance, as Tiverton

8

earned a berth in the Championship game against Wheeler; and

9

WHEREAS, In the Championship game, Tiverton used a late first-half 10 to 1 run to

10

finish the half with a commanding 39 to 28 lead. In the second half the Tigers, led by the dynamic

11

play of Tyler Murray and Carson Hart, who scored 22 and 15 points respectively, closed out

12

Wheeler in dominating fashion as they opened up a 22 point lead on the way to a 17 point, 64 to

13

47 victory; and

14

WHEREAS, The Tiverton Girls' Cheerleading Team overcame a slow start and a thin

15

roster that at one time was short of enough players to qualify for the State Tournament, and

16

repeated as State Champions thanks to some roster additions in November and a team that jelled

17

later in the season and became a team to be reckoned with in the championship tournament; and

18

WHEREAS, Cheerleading is a sport that requires a diverse array of skills and athletic

1

abilities to perfect the stunts necessary to win a championship. It requires that one excels at

2

gymnastics, dancing and jumping, a difficult skill-set to master. Thanks to Coach Susan

3

McDermott's deft roster management, and superb leadership and coaching skills, she was able to

4

mold a youthful and smaller roster into a confident and cohesive team that perfected its stunting

5

techniques just in time for the State Championship. The result was a delight to many, as Tiverton

6

performed flawlessly and once again vanquished the competition and repeated as champions of

7

the Small Division at the 2017 Rhode Island Cheerleading Small Division State Championship;

8

now, therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

10

hereby congratulates the Tiverton Boys Basketball Team on winning the 2017 Rhode Island

11

Boys' Basketball Division III Tournament, and the Tiverton Girls' Cheerleading Team on winning

12

the 2017 Rhode Island Cheerleading Small Division State Championship; and be it further

13

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

14

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mr. Dave Landoch, Head Basketball Coach,

15

Tiverton Basketball, and Ms. Susan McDermott, Head Coach, Tiverton Girls' Cheerleading

16

Team.
