EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF PAUL E. BARBER, SR., M.D. | |

1 | WHEREAS, Paul E. Barber, Sr., M.D., passed away on March 16, 2017. He was the son |
2 | of the late Benjamin and Alice Barber and the loving husband of Barbara A. Barber and the late |
3 | Josephine A. Barber; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Barber was a 1939 graduate of West Warwick High School, where he |
5 | excelled and lettered in basketball and baseball. He later graduated from Rhode Island College in |
6 | 1943, and subsequently served our nation with honor and distinction during World War II as a |
7 | member of the United States Navy; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Mr. Barber graduated from Tufts University of Medicine in 1946, and after |
9 | graduation participated in a rotating internship at the United States Naval Hospital until 1947, |
10 | when he once again enlisted into active duty, with the United States Navy Medical Corps and |
11 | served in French Morocco. He later finished his residency in Obstetrics at the Providence Lying- |
12 | In Hospital in 1950; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Dr. Barber, following his graduation from medical school, military service, |
14 | and his residency, opened a private practice in West Warwick where he devoted his life and |
15 | career to the well-being of his patients for more than fifty years. He was a kind and |
16 | compassionate man and physician who was always available to his patients and had a knack for |
17 | making everyone in his company feel special; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Dr. Barber was a member of the active staff at Kent County Hospital from |
19 | 1951 to 1995, but he continued his involvement with the hospital until the present day. He was |
20 | also a member of the American Medical Association, the Rhode Island Medical Society, the Kent |

1 | County Medical Society, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. In addition, he was a |
2 | member of the Board of Trustees for Kent Hospital and Blue Cross; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Dr. Barber was a fervent supporter of Centreville Bank, where he was |
4 | elected as a Corporator in 1972, and to the Board of Trustees in 1975. He also served on the |
5 | Bank's Audit Committee from 1990 until 1995, when he was elected to the Bank's Board of |
6 | Investment; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Barber leaves behind his wife of almost thirty-two years, Barbara A. |
8 | Barber. He leaves behind his children, Gregory P. Barber, John A. Barber and his wife, Barbara, |
9 | Paul E. Barber, Jr., Claudia A. Greene, Heidi A. Austin and her husband, Brad, Kim A. Barber, |
10 | Jill A. Legault, and the late Deborah A. Grandchamp. He was the stepfather of Anita M. Forest |
11 | and her husband, Steven, Patricia A. Houle, and the late Richard N. "Rick" Houle. He was the |
12 | brother of the late Arthur, Roland, Leo, Albert, and Doris Barber. Dr. Barber is also survived by |
13 | twenty-one grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; now, therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
15 | hereby expresses its condolences on the passing of Dr. Paul E. Barber, Sr., M.D.; and be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
17 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Barbara A. Barber and Family. |
