S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING APRIL, 2017, TO BE "THE MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD" IN

RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Across our nation, and here in the State of Rhode Island, children in military

2

families sacrifice much in order to allow their parents to serve our nation and protect our liberty.

3

In this month of April, people are encouraged to show support for our military and veteran

4

children, and to thank them for their strength and the sacrifices they have made and continue to

5

make; and

6

     WHEREAS, There are approximately 2 million military children in the United States,

7

with 1.3 million being school-aged. The average military student faces transition challenges more

8

than twice during high school, and most military children attend 6 to 9 different school systems

9

from kindergarten through the 12th grade. Taking care of our military children sustains our

10

nation's fighting force and strengthens the health and safety of our nation's families and

11

communities; and

12

     WHEREAS, The Middletown School District serves 600 military connected students,

13

amounting to 26.5 percent of the student population. April 25th is also "PURPLE UP! FOR

14

MILITARY KIDS" day. The month of April is a time to recognize the service and sacrifices of

15

our military members, their families, and especially their children. They deserve our support!;

now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

18

hereby proclaims April, 2017, to be "The Month of the Military Child" in Rhode Island; and be it

19

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit a duly certified copies of this resolution to the Middletown School Committee, and

3

Middletown School Superintendent Rosemarie Kraeger, Chairwoman of the Military Interstate

4

Children's Compact Commission.
