S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING WADE JOHNSON FOR HIS 1ST PLACE FINISH IN THE 2017

     SKILLSUSA RHODE ISLAND COMPETITION IN AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE

TECHNOLOGY

     WHEREAS, According to his mother Dawn Johnson, Wade Johnson has been

2

mechanically inclined since he was a youngster. As a child, Wade loved taking things apart and

3

then putting them back together, including a lawnmower and a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass; and

4

     WHEREAS, Wade first attended High School in Foster, where he resides, but soon

5

transferred to Coventry High School to take part in its automotive program within the school's

6

Regional Career Center; and

7

     WHEREAS, Wade first heard about the SkillsUSA competition as a sophomore. By his

8

senior year, he was rearing to take part in the event, held at New England Tech. During the

9

competition, Wade, and all other participants were required to go from station to station,

10

completing various tasks in the presence of judges, who gave grades to each competitor based

11

upon a criteria that included following proper procedures and taking proper safety measures; and

12

     WHEREAS, Later, at the awards ceremony held at the Providence Veterans Memorial

13

Auditorium, Wade, to the joy of his family, teachers, and friends, was announced as the 1st place

14

winner in the competition. Wade was awarded scholarship money to be used to attend the

15

institution of higher learning of his choice. Andrew Wessner, Wade's automotive teacher, credits

16

his victory in part to the fact that Wade has only missed one day of school this year. Mr. Wessner

17

stated that "There's a direct correlation between attendance and grades," and added "that he tells

18

other students about Johnson and how important it is to be in class"; now, therefore be it

19

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates Wade Johnson for finishing in 1st place in the 2017 SkillsUSA Rhode Island

2

Competition in Automotive Service Technology. We furthermore, wish him continued success in

3

Louisville, Kentucky, at the national competition to be held in June; and be it further

4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Wade Johnson.
