PROCLAIMING MAY 25TH OF 2017, AS "AFTERSCHOOL AND SUMMER LEARNING | |
DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, The citizens of the State of Rhode Island stand firmly committed to quality |
2 | afterschool and summer learning programs and opportunities because they: |
3 | • Provide safe, challenging and engaging learning experiences that help children develop |
4 | social, emotional, physical and academic skills; |
5 | • Support working families by ensuring their children are safe and productive after the |
6 | regular school day and year ends; |
7 | • Build stronger communities by involving students, parents, business leaders and adult |
8 | volunteers in the lives of young people, thereby promoting positive relationships among youth, |
9 | families, and adults; and |
10 | • Engage families, schools, and community partners in advancing the welfare of our |
11 | children; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island has provided significant leadership in the area of |
13 | community involvement in education and well-being of our youth, grounded in the principle that |
14 | quality afterschool and summer learning programs are key to helping our children become |
15 | successful adults; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island is investing in the health and safety of all young |
17 | people by providing expanded learning opportunities that will help close the achievement gap and |
18 | prepare young people to compete in the global economy; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Many afterschool and summer learning programs across the country are |

1 | facing funding shortfalls so severe that they are being forced to close their doors; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Organizations across the state work with local and state officials to make |
3 | sure all Rhode Island children have access to quality afterschool and summer learning programs; |
4 | now, therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
6 | hereby recognizes the importance of investing in quality afterschool and summer learning |
7 | programs; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby proclaims May 25th of 2017, as "Afterschool and |
9 | Summer Learning Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
11 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Elana Rosenberg, Senior Project Manager |
12 | of Expanded Learning at United Way of Rhode Island and Network Lead of the Statewide |
13 | Afterschool Network and the Afterschool Leadership Circle. |
