THE PORTUGUESE-AMERICAN COMMUNITY IN RHODE ISLAND OVER THE PAST | |

1 | WHEREAS, June 17, 2017, is the 40th Anniversary of the Day of Portugal in Rhode |
2 | Island. It is a day when we reflect upon and celebrate the significant contributions the Portuguese- |
3 | American community has made to the cultural and economic well-being of the State of Rhode |
4 | Island; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Rogerio de Oliveira Medina was born in Granja do Ulmeiro, Coimbra, |
6 | Portugal, on December 22, 1940, son of Antonio Pereira Medina and Maria Isabel de Oliveira. |
7 | He is married to Celeste Marques Mendes and is the father of Lillian Medina Travis, Leonor |
8 | Marques Medina, and the late Fernando Jorge Marques Medina, and has eight grandchildren; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Medina is a learned man who has completed numerous high-level |
10 | courses at universities and colleges across the globe in a myriad of subject matters, including |
11 | Industrial Technology Teaching, Industrial Planning, English Language and Literature, a course |
12 | in Economics at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, professional courses at the Community |
13 | College of Rhode Island, a course in General Studies at the University of Rhode Island, and a |
14 | course entitled "English and Citizenship of the Province of Ontario, Department of Provincial |
15 | Secretary and Citizenship". In 1970, he was awarded an official degree of the Order of Infante D. |
16 | Henrique by the President of the Portuguese Republic; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Mr. Medina moved to Canada in 1967, and was a Founding Member of the |
18 | Portuguese School of Lusitania Portuguese Club of Ottawa, serving in the positions of Professor |

1 | and Director until 1975. He also served in the Cultural Services and Consular Section of the |
2 | Embassy of Portugal in Ottawa, Canada, from 1972 to 1975, when he was nominated to serve as |
3 | Vice-Consul of Portugal in Providence, Rhode Island; and |
4 | WHEREAS, For more than forty years, Mr. Medina has been an enthusiastic, tireless and |
5 | faithful supporter of the Portuguese-American community in Rhode Island and has contributed |
6 | much in support of the Rhode Island Day of Portugal. He was a founding member in 1976 of the |
7 | Portuguese Heritage Choir and a member incorporator of the Portuguese Cultural Foundation. In |
8 | 2007, he was the President of the Day of Portugal and the Portuguese Heritage in Rhode Island |
9 | Celebrations. He also served as the General Secretary and President of the General Assembly of |
10 | the Labor Union of Administrative Agents of Diplomatic and Consular Missions of Portugal in |
11 | the United states and Canada; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
13 | hereby honors and thanks Mr. Rogerio de Oliveira Medina for his many contributions in support |
14 | of the Rhode Island Day of Portugal and the Portuguese-American community in Rhode Island |
15 | over the past forty years; and be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
17 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Rogerio de Oliveira Medina. |
