S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE HONORABLE MICHAEL A. TRAFICANTE, DEDICATED

PUBLIC SERVANT AND FORMER MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CRANSTON, ON HAVING

THE SENIOR CENTER IN CRANSTON RE-NAMED THE "MICHAEL A. TRAFICANTE

ENRICHMENT CENTER" IN HIS HONOR

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael A. Traficante has devoted much of his life in

service to the citizens of Cranston. Prior to elective service, Mr. Traficante was a pillar of the

community, serving as a math teacher and later Assistant Principal of Cranston East High School.

He was also a legendary football and wrestling coach, winning division titles in football in 1972

and 1974, and State Championships in football in 1975 and wrestling in 1968; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Traficante began his distinguished public service career when he was

elected to the Cranston City Council in 1979, where he served for years. In 1985, he was elected

the Mayor of Cranston in a special election and became the longest-serving Mayor in the history

of Cranston, serving the city for fourteen years with tireless devotion; and

     WHEREAS, Since 2004, Mr. Traficante has continued his public service to the citizens

of Cranston as a member of the Cranston School Committee. His passionate support for public

education, attention to detail and vast knowledge of the complex and difficult issues related to

public education have made him an invaluable member of the School Committee; now, therefore

be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates the Honorable Michael A. Traficante on having the senior center in

Cranston be re-named the "Michael A. Traficante Enrichment Center" in his honor; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Michael A. Traficante.
